REF Gives Cautious Welcome to Conservative Policy Green Paper

REF today applauded many aspects of the Conservative Green Paper, The Low Carbon Economy: Security, Stability and Green Growth, but noted that whilst it was a significant contribution to Parliamentary thinking on this topic, it shares some of the current government's lack of urgency with regard to security of supply.

Amongst other matters, the document calls for:

•    A rapid expansion of smart metering.
•    An emphasis on tidal generation of electricity.
•    An emphasis on biogas for heat.
•    Encouragement for electric vehicles.
•    The rapid deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage on coal generation.
•    The reform of the Renewables Obligation.

Dr John Constable, Renewable Energy Foundation, Director of Policy and Research said, "The Green Paper's mix of pragmatism and sincere vision is welcome. However, there is a gathering storm in energy that neither Government nor Opposition seems entirely willing to face. The Conservatives, however, are beginning to lead on the issue, and it will be interesting to see whether Government responds to political competition by pulling its head out of the sand."
